The Museum
The Nicola Valley Museum is located on Coldwater Avenue, just east of the Railyard Mall. The 4000 square foot (372 square metre) facility shares a building with the Merritt Senior Citizens Centre. -
Model Train Display
The Merritt Model Train Club used the Museum workshop to create the model train layout that sits in front of a diorama near the entry desk. The layout is a stylized view of Merritt with models of many of the buildings. This photo shows a model of the Coldwater Hotel, part of the extensive city layout. -

Ranching Display
The "tack shed" display, built with rough lumber, contains numerous artifacts related to ranching in the Nicola Valley. -
First Nations Gallery
The First Nations Gallery contains several display cases with Native basketry, artifacts from the James Teit Collection and various materials from the Judge Henry Castillou Collection.Be sure to check the drawers for additional artifacts.

Kitchen Display
You will find a wide variety of utensils on display. Some of them might still be in use in your grandmother's kitchen. -
Harry & Lily Priest
Harry Priest was, among other things, Merritt's first professional photographer. He left a fine legacy of scenes that have been reproduced widely. Lily Priest was the community's first school teacher. -
Church Display
The church display contains a beautiful pump organ plus a circular window and pillars from Merritt's original Catholic Church. -
Craigmont Mine Display
Craigmont Mine was a major contributor to the economy of Merritt and the Nicola Valley from 1951 to 1983. This display contains selected artifacts from the prospecting and mining operation plus graphics illustrating the mining techniques used. -
Coal Mining
The discovery of coal in the hills south of Merritt was one of the reasons the community was founded. Coal mining supported the city's economy from 1910 to the late 1940s. This display includes a detailed model of a coal tipple built by Arthur Leese. -
Parlour Display
Portraits from the past; a century-old wedding dress; and music players that bear little resemblance to today's iPods fill the Parlour. -
James Alexander Teit (1864-1922)
James Teit was a renowned self-taught anthropologist who collected an immense amount of information related to the First Nations People in the BC Interior.
The museum has Teit-related Historical Quarterlies and his The Thompson Indians Of British Columbia book available for purchase.
