Merritt Bowling Green

On Monday May 25th, 1925, Merritt’s first Lawn Bowling Green was opened on James Fairley’s Property on Nicola Avenue. The Merritt Herald listed the price for a seasonal membership as $15 for men, $12.50 for women, and 25 cents per hour for non-members (In today’s money that would be $220, $185, $4/hour respectively). Lawn Bowling was described as a “splendid, healthful sport suitable for persons of any age.” The opening of the Bowling Green was well attended, and featured people such as Dr. J.J. Gillis, Percy Scott, Bob Irving Sr., Bob Drybourgh, Howie Laidlaw, and Bob Hogg. The photo of the opening ceremony is pictured below.

The first competition held against competitors from outside Merritt was held on July 22nd, 1925 when Merritt lawn bowlers faced off against lawn bowlers from Kamloops. It was described as being a well attended event, with a large gallery of people attending. Although the match had to be cut short due to a lack of lighting as the sun set, the teams from Merritt collectively defeated Kamloops 66-46. The game was followed by a luncheon held on the Bowling Green.
